THE GERMAN WINE INSTITUTE (DWI — DEUTSCHES WEININSTITUT) is the worldwide ambassador of Germany’s wine industry. Its central mission is to promote the quality of German wine and promote sales at home and abroad.

Located in Mainz, the DWI works on behalf of all branches of the wine industry, including growers in Germany’s 13 growing regions. It is a nongovernmental association but operates under the statutory supervision of the German Ministry of Agriculture and is subject to the German wine law. The DWI supports quality competitions within the industry and funds scientific research and education through its affiliate, the German Wine Academy.

The DWI’s U.S. office, Wines of Germany, has embarked on a serious effort to increase the reach of German wines in the United States through gatherings, tastings, educational events and networking activities.

Significantly, the DWI office has begun spearheading a drive to retool the image of German wines in the States by spotlighting their quality and building on Germany’s strengths in the Riesling area. German Riesling has soared in popularity and developed a cult following among U.S. wine lovers. It has enormous cachet on it own merits, but it is also gateway wine as more and more wine lovers in the States begin to discover Germany’s outstanding Pinot Noirs (Spätburgunder), which have been flying below the radar for years.

The DWI was enthusiastic about the German Pinot Road Tour from the beginning. We are grateful to the leadership in Mainz for the moral support, contacts, information and feedback they have provided, and we appreciate their encouragement. The DWI will welcome the Road Tour and provide an overview of German wines at a special gathering on the second day of the trip. The organization of the tour, itinerary and choice of estates to be visited are the sole responsibility of Treasures of Europe Tours.
